2-DAY WOODBLOCK WORKSHOP - An exploration of mark making led by Julian Laffan

27-28 JULY,  10-4pm both days

This hands-on weekend workshop will enable participants to develop their skills with woodcut, suitable  for beginner to experienced. Over 2 days you will explore a range of mark making including the use of a knife, gouges and other ways to transfer information to paper in the printing process. Participants will learn through doing and trying different ways to make marks on the surface.  Works of print artists will be examined to inform and help to identify the visual language you are interested in. You will complete at least two different woodblock prints and explore printing them to take home.  Students will see the process from drawing up the block, explorations into cutting and finally printing on a range of papers, focusing on hand printing to enable participants to continue working at home beyond the workshop. 10-4 each day, with a 30min lunch break. **All materials are included in the course fee. $370

'SCRATCH THROUGH THE SURFACE' A weekend workshop led by SCRATCHBOARD artist Joan McKay

13/14 JULY - 10-3 both days

Participants will be tutored by award-winning scratchboard artist Joan McKay who has been practicing in watercolour painting for 30 years, and Scratchbord for 6 years.   Over 2 days,  this 10hr. workshop will provide participants with sufficient time to learn the mark making techniques, including stippling & cross hatching, to create a 5”x5”  image of your choice of bird on an artist-quality Ampersand Scratchbord.  You will learn various ways to scrape the Indian Ink surface to uncover the layer of white smooth clay beneath its surface with tools provided including an X-Acto-type blade and a tattoo needle.  Textures, shading, coloured ink and fine tuning will help to show form and contrast bringing your bird to life. $355
